🇬🇭FORWARD MARCH🇬🇭
Several years ago, we the lucky ones selected to march for our school on the Independence Day Parade were very anxious to meet this day. We rehearsed and rehearsed.
Yours sincerely even harassed Mama to buy those white socks and tasked her to mend my black shoes for the Day.
We were more concern to showcase our marching skills, that I couldn't pay much attention when my stomach rumbled, signalling it needed fuel.
And after managing to march, our DCE who took the salute, had a rather long speech that took ages to render.
We were tired and some of my colleagues collapsed. Yes, they did.
The water they gave us wasn't enough to quench my hunger, so I sneaked out of the queue to buy some ice-cream but I was caught and I guess that's why I never got selected to march in subsequent years.

But every year my colleagues marched.
In fact, ever since independence, school children and security officers have marched on 6th March.
We've over marched the joy in our independence in practically the same way.
We've heard the beautiful lines in our anthem and the saturated verses of recycled or edited phrases of these independence speeches annually.

Could we for instance commemorate this day uniquely and in a different way instead of just marching and marching?
Could we for instance reflect on what we ought to do individually and collectively to truly free our souls from the colonial ghost still lurking around us?
Could we also reflect on what we have to do to truly liberate ourselves from the claws of economic colonialism?

After 59 years of independence why should we be referring to our economic colonizers, as our development partners?
Why should a politically independent country like mother Ghana still import toothpick and other common things we can produce here?
Why should we even allow our donors into our kitchen for them to ration our food for us?
Why should we always take handouts from our colonial masters if we say we're 59 years old in our independence?
Even while praying that our greed will not jeopardize our independence, may we be mindful of our responsibilities and do what we ought to do for our progress and FORWARD March.
