What we are experiencing in terms of desertification, land degradation, and droughts, is much worse, largely due to human activities. Recent statistics of droughts in the horn of Africa, part of East, Central and West Africa are frightening. The testimonies of floods in Mozambique, South Africa and Accra, Ghana tells us the effects. This points to a precarious future for our society in the areas of food security, water shortages, hunger and human survival if we do not take timely action. The theme of today's World Day of Combating Desertification and Drought Day: “Rising from drought together” is an URGENT call for us to tackle desertification and drought. We can effectively address this through a people approach aimed at strengthening community participation and cooperation at all levels to mitigate the effect.
