In Solidarity with PWDs

In our units or cells, they live.

Some are in our homes, houses, and hubs.
Others were in our schools, or people we meet regularly.
Some are even in special locations we know and visit.
They are interesting and differently gifted.
They are essentially human beings eager to smile.

We may hear or not hear their utterances or ideas.
But they speak and communicate in the community.
Often their voices of concern are muffled by the loud dins.
Usually, in public discourse and national planning, their concerns are bitterly an afterthought.
Sometimes they are denied opportunities just because of their disabilities.
Despite some snubs and pressures, a number of our compatriots still rise to breathe life into their dreams.

In marking this International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) today 3 December, could we stand together, United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities?

Could we promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of our society?
Could we support the development, and efforts to empower persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life?
Could we collectively work to reinforce the spirit of care and the essence of securing the rights of people with disabilities?
Could we work together to ensure their inclusion to fully, equally, and effectively participate in the development processes?

In solidarity with PWDs, let us work together to break the social barriers, disdain, neglect, and derision they face in all aspects of their lives.

Perhaps it is worth noting that:
• People with Disabilities are not a mistake.
• People with Disabilities are not a burden but a blessing.
• People with Disabilities can contribute to positive growth.
• People with Disabilities are survivors, who are endowed uniquely.
• People with Disabilities are human beings with rights and also desire respect and equal rights.
• Together let's amplify our voices to advocate for political will and resources to address the health inequities that persons with disabilities experience.

Let's support People with Disabilities wherever we are and however we can.

Greetings.
